About Petrified Wood from Madagascar

Petrified wood – also known as silicified wood – forms when organic wood is replaced by minerals such as quartz, chalcedony, or opal over millions of years. Madagascar is one of the most important worldwide sites for this fossil material. The petrified wood mined there dates predominantly from the Triassic and Jurassic periods, making it up to 200 million years old.

Specimens from Madagascar are characterized by particularly vibrant colors – from warm brown and red tones to gray, beige, and occasionally green – as well as a fine preservation of the original wood structure: growth rings, cellular structures, and branch formations are often still clearly recognizable. Its high density and hardness (Mohs 6.5–7) make it ideal for jewelry processing using a flat cut.
